We’re delighted to welcome the FIRST FILM CLUB back to Picturehouse Central for a special screening of Asif Kapadia’s directorial debut The Warrior, alongside Vathana Suganya Suppiah’s short film இரத்தம (Blood). After the films, both directors will take part in a live discussion and Q&A chaired by FIRST FILM CLUB co-founder, author and critic, Hanna Flint.
Join us after the screening for a drinks reception sponsored by TRIPLE EXPOSURE, providing an opportunity to celebrate the filmmakers, connect over the films, and encourage future collaborations. Brought to you with the support of BFI NETWORK, awarding funds from The National Lottery.
THE WARRIOR
Best known for his acclaimed documentaries, Asif Kapadia's storytelling origins began with this epic narrative feature debut, shot on location in Rajasthan. Influenced by both Japanese chanbara (samurai) stories and Spaghetti Western, the slow-burning period drama centres on Irrfan Khan's eponymous sword-wielding mercenary. He embarks on a spiritual journey back to his native village in the Himalayas to flee the violent plains of northwest India. Still, his former warlord employer won't let him escape that easily.
இரத்தம (BLOOD)
Shanthi finds blood in her underwear at the worst possible time, at her cousin Lani’s coming-of-age ceremony. She panics, far more than a mid-30s woman should for a little blood in her pants. She can’t let anyone find out as she will be shunned for being ‘unclean’ on this auspicious day but she can’t leave the bathroom because the sari she’s wearing has unravelled and she never learned how to tie one. Against the backdrop of a Tamil coming-of-age ceremony where fertility is celebrated, menstruation is shunned and infertility is silenced, Shanti struggles to keep a secret.
This event is a 6.30pm arrival for a 7pm start.
