Join us for a rare chance to see this classic of Soviet fantasy cinema on the big screen. Drawing from traditional Russian fairy tales, director Aleksandr Rou’s VASILISA THE BEAUTIFUL (Vasilisa prekrasnaia, 1939) combined stunning production design with imaginative special effects to create one of the earliest and most influential works of Soviet fantasy filmmaking.

When the virtuous peasant maiden Vasilisa (Valentina Sorogozhskaia) is carried off by a fearsome three-headed dragon, her intrepid fiancé Ivan (Sergei Stoliarov) embarks on an epic journey in search of the folk wisdom and magical weapons he will need to defeat the dragon Gorynych and its sinister ally, the witch Baba Yaga (Georgii Milliar).

Plus a short introduction by Deborah Allison, author of the new book ‘The Films of Aleksandr Rou: Father of Soviet Fairy-Tale Cinema’.
