"We are thrilled to partner with Dark Matter and Picturehouse to showcase films of community, with the community, in an era where we need each other and are constantly redefining what connection looks like." —Lavinya Stennett, Founder and CEO
The Black Black Curriculum's Head of Programmes Kieran who chose the theme for this year says:
"The films represent the many ways we can see family, who we see as family, and how family can affect relationships, loyalty and decision-making. Watching these films can make us reflect on what we would do in these situations, who would be there for us and the big question is, who do we see as family and what makes someone family." —Kieran Watt, Head of Programmes at The Black Curriculum
The Black Curriculum is a social enterprise founded in 2019 by Lavinya Stennett, working to teach and support the teaching of Black history all year round, aiming to empower all students with a sense of identity and belonging.
They aim to challenge Eurocentrism that runs throughout society and the curriculum especially. They run teacher training programmes and audits across the UK and have worked with over 10,000 teachers in over 5 main cities to establish learning hubs, including the Greater London Authority and more.
Since 2021, The Black Curriculum has also worked with 3500 students and partnered up with Pearson to meet their aim of embedding Black history in exam boards. They've worked with brands to provide content, such as Lush, a podcast with Spotify, Books with DK as well as Lewis Hamilton's new organisation Mission 44 to deliver Black history training across the country.
