In Alex Cox’s truly inspired portrait of the punk era, the gawky, rather dim-witted Sid Vicious (a perfectly cast Gary Oldman) is hired as the Sex Pistols’ bassist despite being unable to play the bass guitar – to their Machiavellian manager Malcolm McLaren’s utter delight.
Already on a self-destructive journey, Sid meets spiky American groupie Nancy Spungen (Webb).
Having offered to score some drugs, Nancy promptly absconds with his cash, but when they meet up a little later she claims to have been ripped off.
He naively believes her and falls in love.
Their ensuing and ultimately fatal relationship plays out against the backdrop of the 1970s’ bleakly rebellious music scene.
