It's the hottest day of the year in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood, and tensions are rising along with the temperature.
At the centre of one block sits Sal's Pizzeria, a staple of the street for over twenty years, and the place where Mookie (Spike Lee) works as a delivery boy. But what begins as a simple complaint from one of its customers disintegrates into violence, as hate and bigotry across the community's diverse population – from the pizzeria's Italian owners, to their new Korean business rivals, to their African-American clientele – smoulders until it explodes.
