Thomas Jerome Newton (David Bowie) is an alien, living in disguise on Earth as he searches for water to save his home planet.

While using his advanced knowledge to create inventions, he falls in love with Mary-Lou (Candy Clark), a quiet hotel clerk – and just as he’s preparing to return home, his plan is threatened by the US government.
