After the international success of her first film, Alcarràs confirms Carla Simón as one of the most talented new young directors to come from Catalonia and has deservedly won this year's Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. The impending eviction of a family from the land they have worked on for many decades is the trigger of conflicting emotions amongst the several family members. Simón is not so much interested in traditional narrative as providing a naturalistic view of Catalan rural life through the eyes of the different characters and how each of them live and feel the threat to their livelihood. The meticulous casting of non-professional actors is fundamental in achieving a truthful portrayal and the warm photography captures the beauty of the farmland and the emotions in the faces of the extended family, young and old.
