Watersprite Film Festival presents our new Pop-Up cinema project: ‘An Intro To…’
A taster into aspects of independent cinema that you may not have had a chance to explore before or that you would like a refresher in. Through our interactive events you will get the chance to experience 6 different genres of independent cinema with a community of like-minded people in the Arts Picturehouse, Cambridge. Whether you can name every Scorsese film ever made, you’ve yet to set foot back in a cinema since the pandemic, or you just want to escape the outside world for a few hours; this is a space for you to make your own, to share stories and maybe even to discover a love for film along the way.
Join us for the second of our pop-up events - Persepolis: And Intro to Banned Films.
Persepolis is based on Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel of the same name and follows her life in pre- and post-revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. The themes and content of Persepolis raised complaints within the Iranian government of the time ultimately leading to the film being blocked and banned from multiple film festivals and countries throughout the world.
Through this event we will be asking why might a film be banned? Is there ever any justification for blocking the screening of a film? And what does it mean to screen a film which others have decided should not be seen?
"Based on Satrapi's graphic novel about her life in pre and post-revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. The film traces Satrapi's growth from child to rebellious, punk-loving teenager in Iran. In the background are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal-leaning family detained and then executed, and the background of the disastrous Iran/Iraq war."
