'My Name is Happy’ tells the inspirational story of a Kurdish teenager, Mutlu Kaya, from a remote community in South East Turkey. Aged 19, stardom beckoned when she reached finals of Turkey’s Got Talent. Days later she was shot by a man trying to abduct her. Mutlu survived - but with life-changing injuries. As she attempts to recover, the reality of attacks on Turkish women intrude: her carer & sister Dilek is killed by her boyfriend, and a neighbour is murdered by her fiance. Evoking the story of Mallalah, Mutlu turns to Tik-Tok and her 1.5 million followers to find justice, and records her own powerful protest song.
Turkish charity ‘Mavikus' is running a programme to support children in Hatay, one of the worst affected regions in the devastating earthquakes that hit southern Turkey in February. Filmmakers and artists are travelling from village to village, running workshops for children in places where schools have been demolished or are unable to reopen since the earthquakes. Ticket sales for this screening of 'My Name is Happy' will be donated to Mavikus.
