“Welcome to the party, pal”

…and welcome to Harbour Highlights, a series of cult and classic film screenings handpicked by the staff of Harbour Lights. For the August Bank Holiday, we’re proving that John McClane is not just for Christmas as Cheryl presents a Die Hard triple bill.

After 1988’s Die Hard became an instant action classic, Bruce Willis proved his new action star credentials – after a brief Look Who’s Talking detour – with 1990’s Die Hard 2: Die Harder. The sequel stuck with the successful formula and (surviving) cast from the first film and was an even bigger commercial hit than the first, proving the film’s tagline right – lightning could strike twice. Five years later, with John McClane now an iconic pop culture hero, Willis reunited with his Pulp Fiction co-star Samuel L. Jackson and Die Hard director John McTiernan for Die Hard With a Vengeance, a film which moved the series away from enclosed locations at Christmas to New York City in the middle of summer, resulting in the biggest film of the year and one of the best action films of the 90s.

Regardless of how you rank them, all three films are great examples of 80s and 90s action filmmaking, an era of great characters, witty dialogue, absurd scenarios and, of course, masses of excessive gunfights, fist fights and explosions. Don’t miss your chance to see John McClane have three very bad days where these films belong – on the big screen. Triple ki-yay.
