Headstrong young city girl Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) sets off, wedding dress in tow, to marry a rich older man on his remote Hebridean island. But when stormy weather leaves her stranded on a neighbouring isle, she finds herself struggling to cope with the unplanned turn of events – and in particular, a surprising connection with the mysterious local laird (Roger Livesey).

With flashes of folklore in its life-threatening whirlpools and ancient curses, Powell and Pressburger craft a metaphysical romance that's disarming and enchanting in equal measure.
