Dark Chester
Chester green badge guide David Atkinson leads Dark Chester walking tours.
In these two extracts from the tour, he describes the gruesome fate of John Clare, a man sentenced to death in 1801 for stealing a loaf of bread, and the strange stories of St John’s Church.
St John’s has been a place of spiritual retreat and learning since the Anglo-Saxon times. But it’s also home to one of Chester’s greatest mysteries: the coffin in the wall. Who was the coffin for, and what does its position mean?
