Mr Doom Special Screening. Q&A with director Leif Johnson, DoP Craig Murdoch & Composers Josh Pullen and Daniel Lloyd.
Silent D Pictures presents "Mr Doom – Behind the 8 Ball," a British comedy that reimagines The Color of Money in a small-town setting, with a modern-day spaghetti western twist—where pistols are swapped for pool cues. This marks the debut feature film from writer-director Leif Johnson. The story follows Charlie (Danny Parsons) and Jack (Danny Sutcliffe), two pool hustlers scraping by on the fringes of society, both looking for quick cash. While all the characters have rough edges and dark sides, their flawed charm makes them irresistible to the audience. With a cast featuring stand-up comics, the film expertly balances sharp wit with moments of tragedy and drama. Danny Sutcliffe's standout performance as Jack, a man battling addiction and self-loathing, delivers humour and heartbreak in equal measure. His portrayal brings depth and nuance to this darkly cheeky comedy.
Charlie is a seasoned hustler who crosses paths with Jack, an eccentric pool shark and a professional screw-up. Sensing an opportunity, Charlie cons Jack into working with him by putting him in debt, leading them on a chaotic tour of pool halls. Trouble follows them from venue to venue, mostly due to Jack’s erratic behaviour—his heavy drinking, drug use, and wild lifestyle often set things off. As they spiral deeper into chaos, we learn Jack has a family he can never return to and blames pool for ruining his life. Charlie, too, has a troubled past and isn’t the smooth, level-headed charmer he pretends to be. But the biggest twist comes when Jack reveals a shocking secret that threatens to destroy everything Charlie loves about the game of pool.
