Celebrate 30 years of Harbour Lights with screenings of classic films from our early days

After the death of their father, the Dashwood sisters Elinor (Emma Thompson) and Marianne (Kate Winslet) are forced to leave their family estate and move to a cottage in Devonshire. There they come of age, dealing with changing financial fortunes, love and heartbreak thanks to the attentions of suitors including Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman) and Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant).

First shown at Harbour Lights on 24 May 1996, the film went to critical and commercial success, boosting the careers of director Ang Lee and stars Winslet and Grant, as well as winning an Oscar for screenwriter Thompson who had spent five years adapting Jane Austen’s novel. The result is one of the most beloved adaptations of her work.
