The Ritzy Cinema turns 115 this year, and we’re celebrating with a special double bill that reflects both our history and our home.
We open with The Lonedale Operator (1911), released the same year the Ritzy first opened its doors! It will be a glimpse into the earliest days of cinema as Brixton audiences might have experienced it over a century ago.
We'll then be screening Babylon (1980), Franco Rosso’s landmark film of South London sound system culture. Shot in and around Brixton, Babylon is a vital piece of Black British cinema and a powerful reflection of the area’s cultural history.
Together, these two films tell a story of time, place and cinema itself: from the silent flicker of the early 20th century to the bass-heavy pulse of 1980s Brixton.
Join us as we celebrate 115 years of the Ritzy! A cinema shaped by its community, its history, and the power of film.
