This masterful drama is adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s award winning novel by the tour de force that is director James Ivory, producer Ismail Merchant and writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. Set at the end of WWII, Mr Stevens (Anthony Hopkins), the professional butler of Darlington House, must face up to the anti-Semitism of his employer, the changing landscape of class and tradition, and addressing his hidden affections for the housekeeper Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson). The camera creeps slowly around the house, revealing secrets and regrets, and makes us confront what is worth putting on the line in the name of duty.
