The culture of the ‘nomad’ - van-dwelling citizens displaced in slowly disappearing corners of America - is captured in Nomadland by director Chloe Zhao in her awards-sweeping third feature.
The film follows Fern (a grounded, sincere Frances McDormand) who, after losing her life to the recession, decides to embark on a journey through the American West. On her way, she meets and bonds with many fellow nomads, who teach her important survival skills and help her acclimatise to a life on the road.
With first-time performers rounding out an authentic ensemble and a staggeringly shot landscape, this Best Picture winner is a testament to the notion that home can be found just about anywhere.
