“There's three things in this world that you need: Respect for all kinds of life, a nice bowel movement on a regular basis, and a navy blazer.”
Welcome to Harbour Highlights, a monthly series of cult and classic films handpicked by the staff of Harbour Lights.
This month, Alexa is bringing a Terry Gilliam classic back to the big screen with The Fisher King.
Coming off of 1988’s extravagant flop The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Gilliam chose a more grounded level of fantastical for his follow-up and made a film which, for the first time, he did not write and one which featured no Monty Python stars.
Instead, he cast Jeff Bridges as a depressed, narcissistic DJ and Robin Williams as a homeless man seeking the Holy Grail.
The result merged fantasy and real-life, exploring subjects such as love and mental illness whilst still finding time for a spontaneous waltz between New York commuters, and gave Gilliam a rare, unqualified critical and commercial success.
Earning seven Oscar nominations (including a Best Supporting Actress win for Mercedes Ruehl), the film has become a beloved classic well worth revisiting.
