“You're a mystery, SpongeBob”
Welcome to Harbour Highlights, a series of cult and classic favourites, all handpicked by the staff of Harbour Lights. In August, our own goofy goober Cheryl takes us down to Bikini Bottom to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie!
A spin-off of the popular animated show that began in 1999, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie took all of the anarchic, silly and surreal fun of the series and blew it up on the big screen. When the evil Plankton frames SpongeBob’s manager for a crime he didn’t commit, it’s up to SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick to not only prove his innocence but stop Plankton from brainwashing the residents of Bikini Bottom and taking over the world. Along the way, they’ll encounter a hitman called Dennis, figure out how to be men and meet David Hasselhoff.
Released in the same autumn as Shark Tale, The Incredibles and The Polar Express, the film’s goofy, colourful tone helped it stand out and become a hit. Although well-reviewed at the time, its real critical evaluation has come over the last twenty years, especially by those who saw it as children and have grown-up to appreciate how well-crafted, witty and clever the film is. Zany, creative and weird The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is just outright fun for all ages.
Showing as a summer holiday matinee on Friday 9th August at 12.00 and an evening show on Wednesday 14th August at 20.30
