Navigators Art & Performance presents There's Another Country as part of the Hidden Treasures event for the 2023 York Festival Of Ideas, with filmmaker Martin Nichols hosting a Q&A in the basement after the film.
This multi-genre film presents a kaleidoscope of post-Brexit Britain through the eyes of the director’s father Evan, who fought in World War 2 and enthusiastically voted for the Attlee government of 1945.
What would Evan make of his country today?
Shot entirely in Super 8 to evoke the visual aesthetic of the post-war consensus, the film unearths parallel traumas in both the public and private lives of the country.
It looks back to 1913 and the worst industrial accident in UK history in Evan’s home town Senghenydd - an event which has been effectively erased from the national story. But at the same time it anticipates a rediscovery of the radical transforming spirit of 1945.
“Fantastic, a really clever collage of the personal and political, and the parallel narrative threads ran deep and hit home hard. An important and highly original film.” (Melita Dennett, BBC Radio)
