Surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman) is detached from his life and obsessive about his work. When a mysterious client hires him to tail a young couple, he manages to record a cryptic conversation between them – but when he begins to suspect his client may kill the pair, he makes the mistake of becoming far more involved than he planned.

Tormented by memories of a previous assignment gone wrong, Caul becomes obsessed with the tape, and soon finds himself entangled in high-level power plays that leave him victim to the same technology he uses.
