Back in 2004, Tina Fey redefined the young adult comedy with cult classic Mean Girls. For almost 20 years, it has been a pop-culture landmark for its relatable coming-of-age themes and zinging one-liners, memorialised as a timeless tale on the pitfalls (and pleasures) of revenge.
Ahead of the film's 20th anniversary, the cult classic has been reinvented by Fey as a musical adaptation of the smash-hit Broadway stage show, now unleashed on the big screen.
Re-spinning the story of Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan in the original), who tries to take down cruel high school clique "The Plastics" and their queen bee, Regina George (an unforgettable Rachel McAdams), Mean Girls is a cinematic reinvention of the stage reworking that debuted in 2017. The Tony award-winning production reimagined the film's iconic dialogue in catchy original songs from Legally Blonde's Nell Benjamin and Jeff Richmond. Meet The Plastics, Apex Predator and Revenge Party capture the effervescent comedic energy that radiates throughout the stage show, which a whole new audience will soon be able to experience.
Angourie Rice, best known for Spider-Man: Homecoming, is set to play Cady, while Reneé Rapp will bring Regina George straight from the stage to the screen, with her trusty burn book in tow.
Bebe Wood and Avantika Vandanapu complete The Plastics as Gretchen and Karen respectively, as Moana voice-star Auli'i Cravalho takes on the role of Janis, and Grammy award winner Jaquel Spivey dons that infamous blue jumper as Damien.
The likes of Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps and Jon Hamm round out the cast, while Fey will also make a highly anticipated return as maths teacher and feminist inspiration, Ms. Sharon Norbury.
It promises to capture the essence of the stage show, make fetch happen, update that famous Jingle Bell Rock routine and debut some killer pink outfits (only on Wednesdays, of course). The movie musical will provide a fitting tribute to the classic film's legacy, and a chance for audiences to witness the sass and spectacle from the best seat in the house at your nearest Picturehouse.
